May 2007
May is a great month to work in the garden. The days are warm, flowers are
blooming, and signs of a late season frost are beginning to disappear. May
is the time to prune flowering shrubs that bloom in early spring.
Forsythia, Weigela, and Lilac can be pruned in late May when flowers on shrubs
have faded. This will encourage new growth and a greater flower set for
next year.
May is also the month to begin concentrating on hydrangeas. Add Lime
around the base of the plant to produce pink flowers or Aluminum Sulfate for
blue flowers.
