Select plants for your landscape that will provide vibrant autumn colors. Trees such as flowering dogwood, red maple, sugar maple, Norway maple, red oak and scarlet oak have great red fall color. Shrubs with red foliage in the fall include viburnum, "Burning Bush" euonymus and barberry. Beautyberry, Lantana, and Knock Out Roses add great color with their flowers and fruit from late summer into the fall.
Allow plants to finish the summer growth cycle in a normal manner. Never encourage growth with heavy applications of fertilizer or excessive pruning in September. Plants will delay their dormancy process that has already begun in anticipation of winter in the months ahead. New growth can be injured by an early freeze.
