TIP OF THE MONTH
February 2008
Tips to help conserve water in the landscape:
1. Properly prepare soil to increase water retention and aeration.
- Begin with a good topsoil at least 6 inches deep
- Add at least 2-3 inches of organic matter, such as compost, and fully
incorporate it into the soil
- Use Soil Conditioner to increase aeration, especially in heavy clay
soils.
2. Always MULCH your plantings.
- Mulch will decrease water run off, keep the plant's roots cool, and help
prevent weeds (which compete for water).
3. Divide landscape into zones.
- Observe your garden to ensure that you know which areas of the
landscape tend to stay damp or receive more sunlight.
- Be sure to plant a species of plant that would be appropriate for each
zone in the yard. Depending on the species, the less stress that a plant
is under, the less water it will require.
