When to Prune:
Some plants bloom on new wood (abelia and St. John's
Wort and butterfly bushes). These plants are best pruned while dormant.
When pruning, take out all dead and broken wood and taller, older branches.
Remove about 1/3 of the old wood each year.
Other plants, such as forsythia, lilac, mock orange
and hydrangea bloom on old wood. These plants should be pruned after the
blooms have faded. Remove all dead and broken branches. Thin out about
1/3 of taller, older branches close to ground level.
Start thinking about fall color for your yard! A few
plants that are recommended for fall color include: barberry, clethra, Smoke
Tree, Crape Myrtle, Spirea and Viburnum.
