Field Trip Information

A field trip to the Smith’s Nursery Strawberry Field or Pumpkin Patch is a fun and educational addition to the school year.  Our field trips are catered to preschool classes, elementary school classes (kindergarten through third grade), special needs individuals, church groups, and more.  A field trip to Smith’s Nursery will teach the importance of farming, fruit, pollination, and wildlife.

In the Spring, our staff will teach how strawberries are grown, the proper way to pick them and then let each child pick a bucket of berries in a 'reserved just for you' section of our field!  Irrigation for the strawberries and plants come from two ponds on the property.  We will visit one of the ponds, learn a little about pond life, see turtles and feed the 'hungry' catfish. On the way to or from the pond, we will pass a busy honeybee beehive and talk about the role the bees play in pollinating our flowers and producing fruit. Kids will also get a chance to taste some of the honey made by our busy bees. A stop at the goat pen will provide lots of laughs and a lesson on raising livestock. And last, but not least, some classes will check the bluebird houses for eggs and maybe baby birds!   The cost of the Spring Field Trip is $10.00 per student.

Smith's Nursery offers a wonderful Pumpkin Patch field trip in the fall.  Students will learn how pumpkins are grown and each child will receive a small pumpkin to take home.  Classes will travel around the nursery on an exciting hay ride!  We will stop by an Indian Camp for a brief history lesson on the Native Americans who lived on this land.  Each class will get to see some of the arrow heads and ancient pottery found in the pumpkin field.    A visit to the big red barn provides a lesson on North Carolina farm history.  At the Swinging Bridge Goat Walk students will watch the family of goats as they play and climb to new heights!  The cost per student is $7.00 for the Fall Field Trip.

      Parents and siblings are welcome on the field trip and may participate at the regular field trip rate. Children under the age of 2 are free.  Each class will find that our farm is neat, clean, and fun.  Bathroom facilities are available. Picnic tables are provided, bring bagged lunches for a picnic after the field trip.
